3 Ways To Identify God’s Purpose For Your Life

Have you ever felt a little lost about what God has called you to do?

Have you ever seen others fulfilled operating with their gifts in ministry, organization, business ext. and wished you had something you could be excited about?

If so look no more this blog post is for you!

The truth is that you’re not alone there are many Christians all around the world who have found themselves confused about what God has called them to do.

I believe there are a few reasons for this, the first reason is because most Christians have been told that the only way to be used effectively for the kingdom of God is to be a preacher or in the mission field in a third world country, but I can’t tell you how far from the truth this belief is and I will explain a little more in detail why later.

Secondly, because many Christians have been put in a box they end up denying the very purpose that is usually right in front of them. Because there looking for their purpose to be “more spiritually” important for the kingdom of God you know like “being a preacher”.

Now let me make this very clear being a preacher to a church congregation is an insanely important work for the kingdom of God, however, it’s not what God has called most of his children to do.

So if you are called to be a preacher let me be the first to say thank you for the work you do for the body of Christ but if you are not called to be a preacher let me say that God has amazing work for you to do for the body of Christ.

Thirdly, most Christians discount their purpose due to the feeling that the purpose God has called them to do for the kingdom of God is simply too small or basic. Let me explain.

Let say you have a job and you have the ability to utilize the skills and gifts God has given you in the position, you do great work and treat the people around you with love and you handle their imperfections with patience. You may think your Godly behavior is not that big of a deal and must be doing very little for the kingdom of God. However, what if I told you the bible states otherwise.

You may be shocked to know that God has utilized so many people’s character, skills, and diligent work in the bible to influence their sphere of influence.

For instance, in the story of Joseph’s life we see how God used Josephs character, gifts, and skill set to fulfill his overall purpose in Josephs life which was to be used by God to save Egypt and his family from dying from a famine (Genesis 37:1-44).

God purpose

Which brings me to another reason most Christians doubt their purpose from God in their life.

The fourth reason Christians doubt or have trouble identifying God’s purpose for their life is, the storm they have to go through to get there. Yes! You heard it right “the storm”. The truth is that although once you’re fulfilling your purpose it can be very satisfying, however, there are typically many trials and tribulations while on their journey.

The journey is where most people, including myself at one point, feel like giving up. The journey is also typically the time where most people begin to doubt the purpose that God has told them to do.

The key to getting through any hard season in your life is to simply trust God and refuse to give up.

So is identifying your purpose something you have to guess or can it truly be identified?

Well, the short answer is yes your purpose can definitely be identified and does not just have to  be an educated guess. In fact, in this blog post, I will be sharing 3 ways you can Identify Gods purpose for your life.

Before I jump into the 3 ways, however, I want to make mention that in order to get the details about your specific purpose you will have to spend time with God and ask him for more clarity and direction. My goal here is to ask you three questions that will give you more clarity and clues to what your God given purpose is.

Also, I want to mention that everyone has multiple purposes in life and there is not just one dynamic to anyone’s purpose in life. For instance, I like to think of purpose as having 3 levels:

-Your purpose with God and taking care of yourself.
-Your purpose with your family.
-Your purpose with others.

Let’s discuss each of these 🙂

3 Ways to identify Gods purpose for your life

1). Your relationship with God & yourself care:
Let me start by saying this is one of the biggest pieces to the puzzle regarding your purpose in life. Having a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ is not a religious to do list but it means you have been reborn again by the Holy spirit and you are a child of God.

John 3;3 (KJV)

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

John 3;16 (KJV)

Romans 10;13 (KJV)

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Having a personal relationship with God is the most important part of your purpose and life’s existence. Having this piece of the puzzle will allow all the other pieces to fall into place smoothly. Also, taking care of yourself is very important.

I know so many people who are the biggest givers in the world and I love these folks by the way! However, it’s so important that we take time out to take care of our selves because when we are in a great place spiritually and emotionally we are able to effectively pour into our family and others.

So be ok with treating yourself by doing the things you truly enjoy without feeling selfish about it.

2). Your Family:
Your purpose for your family is very important. Now I know we live in a society that typically says put the purpose for others before your family but I have to strongly disagree.

Your first ministry should be used for your family, whether you are a parent, spouse, siblings, cousin ext. I believe God wants you to first have a positive impact on those you love first.By showing you can take care of your household you will prove you can take care of spiritual things pertaining to God.

Please don’t get me wrong, WE ALL make mistakes I have yet to meet a 100% perfect person from (humans viewpoint) however it’s about putting in your best effort and trusting God with the rest.

Do not feel you can not be used by God to pour into others if you’re currently in a difficult family crisis I truly believe that answer will rely on a case to case basis.

Also, the be led by the Holy Spirit and seek God on what you should do in this instance.I do believe making sure your family feels loved, supported and taken care of is a very BIG deal to God and is a huge piece of most people’s puzzle.

3).Serving Others: Now this is the part where most people get confused, but it actually doesn’t have to be that way because there are 3 things you can do to identify your purpose. However, you want to make sure it’s in alignment with the word of God and you want to also seek God for further assistance. Here are the 3 ways to identify God’s purpose for your life in regards to serving others.

A). Look inside of your own story: Many times God will allow us to go through something and overcome so that we can have the desire to help others overcome the same problem. For instance, let’s say that you had difficult times raising your kids and you learned allot of tips along the way and now you have a strong desire to share practical tips with moms on how to raise their children.

Though this desire may seem small and nonimportant you would be shocked how many people’s lives you could impact for the kingdom of God with the advice that you share. Also, I have found is that we are usually naturally moved to do things because of our own story without even knowing it. Typically there is something within your story that inspires you to take action and do things to help others.

B). Other people’s stories: Sometimes when our purpose cannot be identified by our own stories many times it can be identified from others. For instance, let’s say you went to a 3rd world country and seen people with a lack of food, water and clothing and now your moved with compassion and have the desire to make sure those people are taken care of.

Or maybe you know someone who battled with an addiction and you saw the negative effective it can have on someone’s life and now you have the desire to help others overcome addiction.

C) The desire to change: If you can not identify your God-given purpose by your story or others, it typically can be found in the question “What do you have the desire to change?”. For instance, a great example of this what Dr. Martin Luther king, who’s passion for seeing segregation stopped and all races to love one another came from his desire to see the serious issue of racism in the 60’s changed.

Keep in mind that what you have the desire to change does not have to be super deep but it could be something as simple as wanting to see women value themselves as God does.

Now that you have my top 3 ways to identify God’s purpose for your life I want to leave you with this, God has a purpose for your life and He loves you like crazy! Seek his face above all else through Jesus Christ because God truly is everything you need 🙂
