So your interested in learning more about astrology & after searching Google and Youtube you still have not been able to find a straightforward answer on what the bible actually says about Christians utilizing astrology.
You do not want to be deceived nor do you want to participate in ungodly practices and if that’s the case you’re in the right place.
Before we get into the nitty-gritty of this topic, let’s distinguish the difference between astronomy and astrology.
Astronomy: Astronomy is the study of the universe and its contents outside of Earth’s atmosphere. Astronomy is based on science.
Astrology: Attempts to study how those positions, motions, and properties affect people and events on Earth. Astrologers utilize the stars to determine a persons behavior and predict future events. Astrology is not based on science but predictions.
The biggest difference between astrology and astronomy is that astrology is based on predictions and astronomy is based on science. Theres nothing wrong with understanding things outside the earth such as stars and the planets.
The problem arises when Christians try to utilize the things inside the solar system like “stars” to make predictions about people or the world.
So if God did not create the stars for predictions what did He actually create them for? Great question.

14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: 15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
So we see from Genesis 1;14-15 that God created the stars for multiple reasons let’s break down each of the reasons the bible gives in these two verses.
1). Dividing: The first reason God gave stars was to divide the day from the night. This one is pretty simple to grasp, God wanted to divide the day from the night to help us better keep track of times and days. Think about how much harder would it be to track time if there was not separation between the two, it would be pretty difficult.
2). Signs: So this is where the tricky part comes in because most people who defend astrology would take the word “signs” to instantly mean “heavenly bodies” or constellations. However, the word “signs” does not give enough elaboration for us to assume it’s talking about constellations because signs could actually mean a couple of different things.
For instance, God spoke about there being signs in the stars in the end times. Luke 21;25 (KJV) And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
In Luke 21;25 that Jesus states that there will be signs in the sun, moon and stars but this scripture does not get specific about what signs Jesus may have been referring to.
The stars stated within Genesis 1;14 could be referring to signs that will be given in the end times or they could be representing actual “signs” because before GPS systems, the stars could have been used for directions.
Because the scripture (Genesis 1:14) did not specifically state the specific signs the scripture was referring to we can’t just assume this verse is automatically referring to astrology (meaning given to predict future events). Instead of taking one scripture and trying to make it automatically fit for astrology we should find multiple scriptures to get a full perspective of what the bible says about astrology.
3). Seasons: The seasons of the year were indicated by the position of the sun, moon and stars.
4). Days & Years: This simply means the light in the firmament (the stars) can be utilized to track days and years.
5). Light: One of the major functions for the stars was to give light upon the earth.
In order to give an in-depth answer to if Christians should practice astrology, I will be discussing some of the top reasons most Christians feel it’s ok to utilize astrology.
The Top Reasons Most Christians Feel Astrology is ok and what the bible actually says:
1). The Wise Man: If you ask most Christians who practice astrology why they feel it’s ok to do so, one of the first things they will respond with is “the wise man utilized a star to find Jesus” and I have, to be honest before I actually read the scripture for myself I also thought the same thing.
But once I read the scripture I was amazed at what I found out. I quickly realized that the star the wise man were following did not operate as a normal star.
Meaning the star in greek (aster) did not stay in one place but it literately traveled and guided the wise man to the exact place where Jesus was.
Matthew 2;9-10 Says, when they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
No star we know can do that! Even shooting stars – really meteors burning up in the atmosphere – cannot change directions and stop over a specific place. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
The “star” being spoken of was more than likely an angel.
Angels have been referred to as stars many times in scripture here a few instances below:
Job 38;7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Rev 4;7 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
(Also this was not a constellation the wise man were following being there was only one star mentioned).
2). Jesus stated to look up: Some people believe when Jesus was stating to look up in Luke he was referring to look up and study the stars but is that what Jesus was stating? Let’s look into the scripture and it’s context a little deeper.
(This image is not the full reference scripture please
read the full reference scripture below)
Luke 21;25-28 (kjv) says, And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; 26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
So after reading this scripture (Luke 21;25-28) you can see that Jesus was not referring to astrology or even the stars he was simply expressing that after these things are redemption will be very soon. So this scripture was more about the timing/closeness of Jesus return.
3). Abraham was an astrologer: Many people state that Abraham was an astrologer because God told him to “look up at the stars”, they also believe he was an astrologer because he was invited to the king’s place and lived among the Chaldeans, however, I will be breaking down here how none of these viewpoints add up.
A). He told Abraham to look at the stars?
(Click the image to pin it to pinterest)
Genesis 15;3-5 (kjv) says, and Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. 4 And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.
5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 6 And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
So as you can see God was not telling Abraham to look up at the stars for astrology he was simply using the stars to give Abraham an example of how many people he will be a father to.
Romans 4;16-17 (KJV) says, 16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
B). Abraham Got invited to the king’s place and events:
Many use the argument that Abraham was an astrologer because he was invited to the king’s palaces and events. However, we cannot assume this was because he was an “astrologer”. There are two more plausible reasons he could have been invited to the king’s place or events among the Chaldeans.
One is his wife Sarah who was very fair and beautiful and whom Abraham told that she was his sister Genesis 20;2 “And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah”.
Another reason may be because Abraham was very wealthy meaning he bought, sold and traded goods & it’s possible that because of his wealth he was invited to nice events or he may have had outside connections and been invited to things because of them.
Both of these two probable reasons are way more inline with scripture than his invites coming because he was an “astrologer”.
C). Abraham lived among the Chaldeans:
The Chaldeans did practice evil however we can not assume just because Abraham were among them that he also did the same things because God sets his chosen apart to be holy unto Him. For instance, there are many Christians throughout the world who live around ungodly people and in ungodly nations however they choose to not partake in the lifestyle of the world around them, I believe this is also what Abraham did.
However let’s suppose that the belief of “Abraham” was once an astrologer was true, this still cannot prove that he did not change once he began his relationship with God. Again there is no biblical reference nor evidence that Abraham participated in any such activity and our ultimate authority that we should be guided by as Christians is the bible.
4). Joseph was an astrologer: Some say Joseph was into astrology because God gave him a dream with stars in it.
Genesis 37;9 says, And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
As you can see again, this scripture does not reflect Joseph as an astrologer at all. God was simply giving Joseph a dream and he utilized stars within the dream to further explain what he meant.
5) Sign of Shiloh? Some Christians have even gone so far to take scriptures like Genesis 49:10 to begin practicing and teaching others to practice astrology in belief this scripture was prophesying about the rapture.
This is one of the biggest tricks the enemy uses to get Christians with astrology is he will try to say there are constellations in the heavens which represent biblical characters and we should follow them to predict future events and because there “biblical characters” this will make astrology Christian right? Wrong.
Before I dig deep into Genesis 49:10 I want to first state that there may be constellations (stars) in the heavens that do represent bible characters, however, this does not give Christians the right to follow them to predict the future.
This is where many have gone wrong. I seen one guy who predicted the rapture would have to be before July 14,2016 according to what he states to be the “Sign of Shiloh” and other constellations. It’s now July 27th and he’s currently justifying and still trying to prove his statement was right.
Let’s break down Genesis 49;10
Genesis 49;10 (kjv) says, the sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.
Scepter means: an ornamented staff carried by rulers on ceremonial occasions as a symbol of sovereignty.
Lawgiver means: Is Jesus Isaiah 33;22 says For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us.
Shiloh: Is the prophetic name of the Messiah.
Some “Christian” astrologers have tried to take this scripture and turn it to be about astrology and the rapture. Meaning they took the scepter and made it something in the heavens, they said the “lawgiver and the shiloh” part also represents a constellation, they say these things even though there is no where in this scripture it even mentions a star.
It’s actually very probable this scripture is referring to the secound coming of Jesus due to the statement “and unto him shall the gathering of the people be” which is what will happen at the secound coming of Jesus another translation states “and the obedience of the nations shall be his”.
What does the bible say about astrology? Please read the above content if you have not read it yet to get the full picture 🙂
Before I give you direct scriptures in regards to astrology I want to share with you the definition of worship because many Christians will see the word “worship” and automatically picture there hands raised or praying to a diety. However, hands raised, singing songs and praying is not the only form of worship, in fact, here is the exact definition of the word worship below.
Worhip: means to show deep reverence and adoration for (a deity); honor with religious rites.
Reverance Means: deep respect for someone or something.
Adoration Means: deep love and respect.
So if your looking to the stars for predictions of peoples behavior or to predict upcoming events which is what astrology is, than I would say you hold a deep reverence and adoration for the stars. So when you see these scriptures below and see the word worship feel free to look at the definition above to understand what the scritpture is stating.
Here are some direct scriptures below regarding what the bible says about astrology.
1). Deuteronomy 18;10-14 (kjv)
10 There shall not be found among you [any one] that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, [or] that useth divination, [or] an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,11Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
12 For all that do these things [are] an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. 13 Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.14 For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so [to do].
Observer of times: Same as astrology or stargazing. It is another form of divination. It is a person who looks to the stars for guidance.
2). Isaiah 47:13-14 (kjv)
Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, Stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; They shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: There shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.
3). Deuteronomy 4:19 (kjv)
And beware not to lift up your eyes to heaven and see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, and be drawn away and worship them and serve them, those which the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven.
4). Deuteronomy 17:3 (kjv)
and has gone and served other gods and worshiped them, or the sun or the moon or any of the heavenly host, which I have not commanded,
5). Acts 7:42-43 (kjv)
42 Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness? 43 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
6) 2 Kings 17;16-17 (kjv)
16 And they left all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshiped all the host of heaven, and served Baal. 17 And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger.
7). 2 Chronicles 33:5 (kjv)
For he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD.
So now that you know the truth about astrology what’s the next step? Well if you have not been involed in astrology keep it that way. If you are a Christian and have been involved in astrology all you have to do is confess the sin to God and truly repent from it, meaning turn away from it. When you repent to God he is faithful and just to forgive you of all of your sins.
1 John 1;19 (kjv) says, 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
